THE NORTH STAR BALLET COMPANY
The North Star Ballet Company is a civic, regional performing company offering pre-professional stage experience to the career oriented dancer and performance opportunities to the recreational dancer. The Company provides arts enrichment and recreation for the Interior through two major productions, lecture-demonstrations, mini-performances and master classes during the year. The Company has three levels of membership: Senior Company, Apprentice Company and Junior Company.
The North Star Ballet Company produces a full-length Nutcracker for the holiday season featuring lavish period sets and costumes and special effects. The cast includes roles for 40 children which are typically double cast making it possible for as many as 80 children to be involved. Guest artists of national reputation frequently appear in the production providing an opportunity for Fairbanks audiences to enjoy their singular talents and bringing unique learning opportunities to company dancers.
Each spring the North Star Ballet Company produces a Spring Gala performance featuring new choreography and works from repertory. Programming for the Spring Gala is designed to exposing audiences to a broad range of choreographic styles. Classics such as Les Sylphides and Coppelia are presented with new works especially created for the North Star Ballet. The Company has enjoyed, for example, a distinctive association with John Luther Adams, the nationally known composer who has resided in Fairbanks since 1980. The repertory includes several ballets to his music bringing a unique Alaskan quality to the Company’s performances. In addition, the Spring Gala is frequently highlighted by the presentation of a one act ballet especially designed to appeal to children and develop new audiences. Examples include Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella. |
