Auditions for The North Star Ballet Company are held at the beginning of each season (see School Calendar for dates). Auditions are publically advertised and are open to any student. Students must be 13 years old to audition for the Senior and Apprentice Company. Students must be 11 years old to audition for the Junior Company. Placement in the Company is at the discretion of the Artistic Director and is based on ability, experience and enthusiasm. Company members must sign a contract for the season. The contract outlines the responsibilities of company membership and the responsibilities of the Company to the dancer. A sample Company Contract can be seen under Sample Contracts.
Guest dancers are frequently utilized in the Company’s annual production of The Nutcracker. Dancers wishing to apply for these positions may do so by submitting a resume and DVD of class work or performance to
The North Star Ballet
PO Box 73486
Fairbanks, AK 99707
A resume may also be submitted to nsdf@polarnet.com. Guest dancers are considered to be contract labor for the period of the production and are paid a small stipend, provided with transportation and housing with a host family.
Children’s auditions for The Nutcracker are held at the beginning of the season (see School Calendar for dates). Auditions are publically advertised and open to any child who has passed their eighth birthday by the date of the audition. The Nutcracker is a wonderful opportunity for children to be part of a large theatrical production, experience the excitement of working together to accomplish a common goal and enjoy the rewards of commitment.
Every effort is made to include as many children as possible in the production. Children's roles are double cast providing an opportunity for up to 80 children to participate.
Roles are cast according to ability and enthusiasm, but a major consideration has to be that a child can fit into the existing costume for a role. If a child is not cast, it does not mean that he or she did not do well in the audition. It may simply be a matter of not being the right size this year and children are encouraged to audition again next year.
