NORTH STAR BALLET SCHOOL
CREATIVE MOVEMENT PROGRAM
For children who are at the initial levels of exploratory development (ages 4-7), the North Star Ballet School offers a Creative Movement Program based on natural movement rather than formal dance styles. The program provides an easily accessible and personal movement vocabulary based on understanding concepts such as space, time and energy.
A new dance element is presented each week and children create and explore dances with the teacher’s guidance and encouragement. Carefully selected activities form a solid foundation for future development in dance and contribute significantly to the child’s overall growth. The Creative Movement Program utilizes the core processes of doing, perceiving, knowing, understanding, relating and evaluating. These skills form an important foundation for future curriculum development in dance and in all learning.
Creative movement provides a means for children to develop self-awareness out of which comes awareness of others and a process of developing inter-personal relationships. It is a meaningful way to develop motor control, verbal and kinesthetic understanding and spatial awareness.
Creative movement facilitates problem solving, concentration and focus. Classes develop flexibility, strength and coordination. On a social level, children learn to work cooperatively with each other and to accept and value individual differences. The classes help children develop creativity, divergent thinking skills and contribute to the search for values. Children develop an aesthetic dimension to the educational process that can be carried into adulthood. Creative movement leads naturally to a need for a more specific technical means of dance expression and thus, is an ideal preparation for ballet training
